Classic Frosted Sugar Cookies

Submitted by: A Facebook user
I got this recipe from www.allrecipes.com, and they're pretty perfect. It is difficult to add coloring to the frosting, though, because it is made with shortening - this is my only complaint.

Serves: 8

Cooking time:

Ingredients

1 cup butter
1 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup shortening
1 pound confectioners' sugar
5 tablespoons water
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon butter flavored extract

Method

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. DO NOT GREASE COOKIE SHEETS.

Using an electric mixer, cream together butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until light and fluffy.

In another bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually stir flour mixture into butter mixture. Blend well. Chill dough for 2 hours. Roll dough out on lightly floured board about 1/4 inch thick and cut into desired shapes.Bake on ungreased pans at 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) for 4 to 6 minutes. Remove cookies from pan and cool on wire racks.

Using electric mixer, beat shortening, confectioners sugar, water, salt, vanilla extract, and butter flavoring until fluffy. Frost cookies.
