Red Velvet Cake & Butter Cream Frosting

Traditional Southern dessert, wonderful when made with good cocoa and the right butter cream frosting.

Ingredients

** CAKE **
1/2 cup Crisco shortning
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 oz red food coloring
2 eggs
1 tsp baking soda
1 tbsp cocoa
1 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
2 1/4 cup plain flour
1 tsp vanilla
1 tbsp vinegar

** FROSTING **
1 stick butter, softened
2 tsp vanilla
1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
1 box powdered sugar

Method

** CAKE **
Cream sugar, shortening and eggs until fluffy.

Make a paste of cocoa and red food coloring, add sugar mixture, then add salt, flour, buttermilk and vanilla. Beat in mixer until smooth.

Fold in vinegar and soda.

Bake in two 9" cake pans for 35 minutes at 325

** FROSTING **
Beat ingredients together until smooth
