1. Wash lemons and slice them thinly.
2. Place lemon slices in an enamel, glass, or stainless steel container. (set aside a few slices for garnish)
3. Add sugar and pound with a wooden spoon, stirring to make a syrup.
4. Let stand for 20 minutes.
5. Add water and ice and reserved lemon slices.
Best if served within 6 hours.
