Molasses Crinkles

Comes from a very old cookbook, shown by the fact that the recipe is described thus: “Thick, chewy, with crackled, sugary tops. We begged the recipe from Mrs. Fred Fredell in St. Paul, Minnesota.”

Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 10 to 12 minutes

Serves: 4 dozen

Dietary guidance: v 


¾ cup soft shortening
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 egg
¼ cup molasses
2 ¼ cups flour
2 teaspoons soda
¼ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger


Mix shortening, sugar, egg and molasses thoroughly. Measure flour by dip-level-pour method or by sifting. Blend all dry ingredients; stir in. Chill. Heat oven to 375 degrees. Roll dough into balls the size of walnuts. Dip tops in sugar. Place, sugar-side-up, 3” apart on greased baking sheet. Sprinkle each with 2 or 2 drops of water. Bake 10 to 12 minutes. Makes 4 dozen.
