Ginger Snaps

1 cup white sugar
3/4 cup butter or shortening
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon cinamon
1 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cloves
pinch of salt
sugar to dip cookie dough into


Cream together butter and sugar
Add egg and molasses; beat until blended
Add dry ingredients and mix well
Form into balls and dip each ball in white sugar
Place on cookie sheet approx. 2 inches apart
Bake 10 to 12 minutes in 350 F oven Let cool for 2 minutes on cookie sheet, then remove to racks to cool completely

*The tops of these will always crack
