American-in-England Baked Beans

Not quite the classic, as this uses kidney beans to save some time, but it's the American style baked beans with a sweet sauce rather than English beans in tomato. A little taste of the new world in the old.

Cooking time: 3 hours

Serves: Lots


6-7 cans kidney beans, rinsed
2 onions
2 c. ketchup
2 c. brown sugar
4 T treacle or molasses
2 T salt
4 t. ground mustard
1 package American-style or streaky bacon, cooked and crumbled


Put beans and onions in a medium-sized casserole. Mix all the other ingredients and pour over the beans, mixing well. Cover with aluminium foil and bake at 300 (Gas Mark 2) for 2- 2 1/2 hours or until sauce is as thick as desired. Stir occasionally, and add water if it gets too dry or thick.
