Pear-Turnip-Gorgonzola Pizza

For a change from the usual red sauce base- a tasty blend of sweet and savory.

1 recipe yeasted or sourdough pizza dough

olive oil
3 cups mozzarella, divided
2 oz gorgonzola crumbles
1 pear, sliced
2 small turnips, sliced
handful walnuts, optional


1. Preheat oven to 450 F. If you have a pizza stone, put it in to warm
2. Start with prepared pizza dough spun out to 10" round (or rectangle, if you're like me and deficient at spinning)- put on a cookie sheet
3. Coat *lightly* with olive oil
4. Sprinkle on about 2/3 of the mozzarella
5. Layer on the pear and turnip slices
6. Add last bit of mozzarella and sprinkle on gorgonzola crumbles, add walnuts if using
7. Slip into oven on middle shelf, cook for 10 min
8. Rotate to top shelf of the oven, cook for 10 min
9. Transfer pizza to hot pizza stone (careful!) and finish for a crispy bottom crust- about 5-10 more minutes

*This might work with a pre-made crust, but the cooking times would be different- probably much less time in the oven for a pre-cooked crust.
*This is also really good with toasted hazelnuts on top
*Potatoes would also work in place of turnips, but will be mushier
