1 loaf Italian bread
5-6 cloves fresh garlic (lacking fresh garlic cloves, use chopped garlic from a jar)
5-6 tablespoons butter or margarine
5 tablespoons oil (salad)
Cut bread horizontally so it opens like it would to make a sandwich but only cut 3/4 of the way through. Place on a sheet of aluminum foil.
Peel and mash garlic (lacking garlic crusher, wrap garlic with saran wrap, place on counter and whack it with bottom of frying pan).
In medium sized skillet melt butter and oil over medium heat. When melted, add garlic. Stir. Let cook 30 seconds but don't let it brown (burnt garlic is bitter). Remove skillet from heat and turn off stove. Poor garlic butter mixture into the crease in the Italian loaf. Encase bread in foil and wrap tightly. Put bread in oven on middle rack for 20 minutes. To serve: unwrap and place on plate.
