Golden Raisin Cake

1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 1/2 cup buttermilk
2 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 teaspoon soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon orange peel
1 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup golden raisins
1/2 cup nuts
golden Raisin Cake Icing
candied orange slice for garnish (optional)


Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease and flour two 9-inch round or 3 8-inch round cake pans. Cream butter, shortening and sugar. Gradually beat in eggs and buttermilk alternating with dry ingredients. Add the orange peel and vanilla. Scrape bowl occasionally and blend until smooth. Add raisins and nuts BY HAND. Divide batter into prepared pans. Bake 35 minutes at 350 degrees or until cake tests done. Cool before frosting.
