Difficulty: Easy - for beginners
1 c. soft butter (it's critical that it's soft)
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. regular all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/8 tsp. salt
12 oz. package of M&Ms
3/4 c. chopped nuts (optional)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and the sugars until light and fluffy. It is critical that the butter be at room temperature in order to make this step work nicely.
Beat in the egg and the vanilla.
In another bowl, mix together flour, baking soda and salt.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix well.
Stir in the M&Ms or if adding into a mixer, some may get broken but not damage has been done.
Grease cookie sheet and using a teaspoon, drop a heaping teaspoon of cookie dough onto cookie sheets, about 2 inches apart.
Bake cookies on bottom rack for 5 minutes and then move to top rack for the other 5-7 minutes. Cool on wire racks.
