Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef
1 sweet onion, diced fine
1 red bell pepper, diced fine
1 green chili pepper, diced fine
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 can (398mL) crushed tomatoes
1/2 tbsp cider vinegar
1/2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp liquid hickory smoke
1/2 tsp Sriracha (Rooster!) hot sauce
1 tbsp brown sugar
1/2 tsp mustard seed
1/4 tsp paprika
1 tsp cumin seed
1/2 tsp basil

Method

Put the ground beef in a pot on low heat, stirring regularly until it is still pink, but takes on a pasty texture, then turn up the heat and brown it. Drain off excess fat if you feel there's too much.

At the same time, fry the onion in olive oil until it begins to turn clear. Add the mustard seed, cumin seed, paprika, and basil, and continue to fry for another two minutes or so. Add peppers and continue to fry until peppers are cooked and onion begins to caramelize. Mix in garlic, fry just until garlic is cooked, then add the vegetable and spice mixture to the beef. Fry them together for a couple minutes, then add the remaining ingredients and simmer until you hit your desired consistency.

Serve on buns for sloppy joes. Serve on wraps with avacado and spring greens for sloppy hipsters. Serve on a toasted kaiser with sauteed mushrooms, provolone cheese, and pickled banana pepper rings for a sloppy steve.
