Difficulty: Easy - for beginners
1 c hot water
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 Tbs shortning
1/4 c sugar
1 compressed yeast cake softened in 2 Tbs lukewarm water
1 egg well beaten
3 1/2 - 4 c sifted flour
Combine hot water, salt, shortning, and sugar. Cool to lukewarm. Mix in the yeast. Add the egg and half of the flour. Beat well. Stir in more of the flour (enough to make the dough easily handled).
Grease the top of the dough then cover with wax paper and a towel.
Store in refrigerator (keeps about a week).
Use as needed by cutting off dough then letting it stand in a warm room about 1 hour.
Then shape the dough into rolls and arrange it on a greased pan. Cover and let it rise until the rolls have doubled in size.
Bake at 425 for 12-15 minutes.
