enough pickles to fit in gallon jar
2 Tablespoons alum
2 Tablespoons salt
1 cup whole mixed spice
4 cups white vinegar
4 cups sugar
Place pickles in jar. Add spices to pickles. Fill with water. Cap and let stand 1 month. Drain after month. Remove from jar and wash thoroughly. Cut into chunks and put back in jar. Add sugar and cap. Shake vigorously until pickles are covered with sugar and a liquid forms. Store in refrigerator.
