Almost Doughnuts

1/3 cup softened butter or margarine
6 tablespoons sugar
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/4 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/3 cup milk

1/2 cup butter or margarine
2/3 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon


Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease one regular muffin tin (12 cups). With an electric mixer, cream sugar and butter till blended. Mix in egg, then add other ingredients in order listed until thoroughly blended. Batter will be fairly stiff. Spoon into prepared tins. Bake 12-15 minutes or until tops are golden and a tester inserted into a muffin comes out clean. Meanwhile, make the topping. Melt 1/2 cup butter and pour into a small bowl. In another small bowl, mix 2/3 cup sugar with cinnamon. When doughnuts are done, remove immediately from pans while still hot, roll in melted butter and then in sugar/cinnamon mixture. Serve warm. To reheat, place in a covered casserole dish and warm in the over at 250 to 300 F.
