Raw Papaya Curry

In Sri Lanka we also make a light curry out of unripe green papaya by adding grated coconut, turmeric, onion, garlic, sweet cumin, mustard.

Preparation time: 10 min
Cooking time: 15 min

Difficulty: Easy - for beginners
Serves: 3-4

Dietary guidance: v v g d 


1 small unripe papaya (It should be hard and not yellow inside)
Pinch of Turmeric
¼ to ½ cup water.
1 cup grated coconut (dessicated coconut will do as well)
Pinch of sweet Cummin
1 tsp mustard seeds
Salt and Pepper to taste
3 cloves garlic
1 small red onion
You can add a chopped green chilli for extra kick!


Cube the papaya and keep on a medium fire with just enough water to simmer it. Add the turmeric to the water.

In a food processor or grinder mix the other ingredients until well combined and add to the semi-cooked papaya. Keep stirring the mixture very quickly on medium to high heat for about 1-2 minutes and remove as soon as it starts giving off an aroma.
