Soft Pretzels

Difficulty: Easy - for beginners


1/2 cup warm water
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1 envelope (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
1 cup warm water
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
3 3/4 cups flour
1 large egg, fork-beaten
1 tablespoon water
course salt, sprinkle
sesame seed, sprinkle


Stir first water and amount of sugar in small bowl until sugar is dissolved. Sprinkle yeast over top. Let stand for ten mnutes. Stir to dissolve yeast. Stir second amount of water and sugar in large bowl until sugar is dissolved. Add yeast mixture. Gradually mix in flour untill stiff dough forms. Turn out onto lightly floured surface. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Let rest for 10 minutes. Divide dough into 12 equal portions. Roll each porion into 15-inch rope. Shape each rope into pretzel. Arrange on greased baking sheets. Combine egg with remaining water. Brush tops of each pretzel. Sprinkle salt and sesame seeds over pretzels. Bake at 425 degrees F for about 15 minutes.
