Joanna's au Gratin Ham and Potatoes, loosely recreated

I should have written this down the day I did it. This was my method, to best of my recollection.

2 C chopped ham
1 onion
3 cloves fresh garlic
4 T butter
3 T flour
1 T oregano
1 t salt
1/4 t pepper
3 C milk
1 C shredded American cheese
1 C shredded Gruyere cheese
2 pounds potatoes, peeled and sliced thinly


Rub casserole dish with clove of garlic and then butter it. In large pan, saute garlic, onion, and chopped ham; set ham aside. Add butter, flour, oregano, salt, and pepper to garlic and onion, blend into a roux. Stir in milk, cooking and stirring until smooth. Add shredded American cheese and half the Gruyere, stir. Layer potatoes, ham, and cheese mixture into prepared casserole dish. Add additional cheesy sauce as needed. Grate remaining Gruyere on top. Bake at 350F until the top is golden and potatoes are tender, 45 minutes to one hour.
