Aunt Helen's Applebutter Spice Cake

1/2 c brown sugar, packed
1/2 c nut meats, chopped
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg

2 c all purpose flour, sifted
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c butter
1 c sugar
2 eggs
3/4 c apple butter
1/2 c all bran
1 tsp vanilla
1 c sour cream


combine topping ingredients and set aside.

Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Blend together butter and sugar. Add eggs. Beat well. Stir in apple butter, vanilla, and bran. Add sifted ingredients alternating with sour cream, blending well after each addition.

Spread half of the batter into a greased 13 X 9 baking pan. Sprinkle with one half of the topping mixture. Spoon the remaining batter into the baking pan. Spread evenly. Sprinkle with the remaining topping.

Bake in a 350 F oven for about 40 minutes. Cut into squares and serve warm or cold. May serve plain or top with whipped cream if desired.
