Monastery Soda Bread

Scrumptuous Irish soda bread as baked every morning by the staff at the Monastery Hostel in Letterfrack. Best eaten fresh with a dollop of butter and orange marmelade

Ingredients

3 cups wholemeal flour
1 1/2 cups pinhead oatmeal or rolled oats
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/2 or 3/4 pint buttermilk

Method

Preheat the oven at 400 degrees F (200°C).
Mix together the dry ingredients. Add the buttermilk - stir but do not overmix. The dough should be fairly moist but not runny. Put this into a lightly greased baking pan and bake for 20 minutes or until knife inserted in middle comes out clean.
