Cooking time: 20 - 25 min
1 tsp. sugar
1/2 cup warm water
1 pkg. active dry yeast
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 egg, beaten
2+ cups flour (sometimes need about 2 1/2)
1/2 cup melted butter
1 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup raisins (optional)
In mixing bowl... disolve yeast in warm water and 1 tsp. sugar. let stand 10 min. or until frothy.
In a metal bowl, scald milk, add butter, white sugar, and salt. Cool til luke warm.
Add beaten egg and yeast mix.
Add 2 cups flour and beat with a spoon or mixer 2 minutes.
Gradually add enough flour to make soft dough.
Kneed on a floured board about 5 minutes, until smooth and springy.
Place in a greased bowl and turn to grease all surfaces. Cover and let rise til double - approx 1 1/2 hours.
Punch down. Roll out in a rectangle. Brush with melted butter. Sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon (and raisins). Roll up and pinch ends to seal.
Slice with a sharp knife.
Spinkle a little extra brown sugar, cinnamon and butter in bottom of a greased pan. Add slices and let rise until double in size (approx. 1 hour).
Bake at 375 degrees. for 20 -25 min. until golden brown .
