-a sheisty crock pot (the sheistier the better)
-a bunch of carrots, peeled
-a bunch of parsnips, peeled
-a giant onion, cut into sections
-2 "tubes" of Manischewitz soup mix (any flavor or flavor combo), available in the kosher aisle
-some fresh dill, to taste
-meat: soup meat, cholent meat, steaks, slabs, flanken, ribs, etc.
-substitute: chicken, turkey legs, any other delicious protein source
1) Toss the peeled carrots into the crock pot. I toss them in whole, but the Ripper likes to cut them up into pieces
2) Toss the parsnips into the crock pot. I toss them in whole, but the Ripper likes to cut them up into pieces
3) Toss the meat into the crock pot. I toss it in whole, but the Ripper likes to cut or rip it up into pieces. If you are having guests, you might want to consider washing the meat. Note that this will significantly diminish the sheistiness of this dish.
4) Toss the onion sections into the crock pot.
5) Toss the dill into the crock pot. I toss it in whole, but the Ripper likes to cut or rip it up into pieces.
5) Dump the soup tubes and all their contents and spices into the crock pot.
6) Fill the crock pot to about an inch or centimeter below the top with tap water. At this point, the Ripper likes to stir the mixture.
7) Cover the crock pot. Set on High until just before Shabbat starts. Before Licht Bentschen or before you leave for shul, turn the heat down to Low (NOT keep warm! it must be Low!)
8) Let sit overnight, stewin' away. It is during this period that a reaction occurs, with the heat chemically turning the once recognizable components sheisty. By the time you wake up, your entire house, clothes and furniture should smell AMAZING. Ignore it on your way out to shul.
9) After coming home from shul, remove crock pot from heating element. Stir the contents in the pot before serving into bowls. It should all be so gedempt (soft) by this point that by merely stirring it, all the carrots and meat and onions and parsnips that used to be whole and solid will break up into yummy manageable pieces.
10) Enjoy with Shkedei Marak. Ask your guests if this is not the sheistiest soup they have ever put into their tummies. There is enough for the whole table, with seconds.
Vegetarians: substitute meat with zucchinis, more carrots, noodles, beans or any other vegetable that you are interested in trying.
This recipe is also very simple and quick to clean up after, since it is mostly liquid that is easily washed away down the drain.
