Serves: 6 dozen strips
Dietary guidance: v
1 pkg active dry yeast
1/2 c. warm water
4 c flour
3 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c firm margarine or butter
3 eggs seperated
1 c. lukewarm milk (scalded then cool)
1 c.fruit preserves ( any flavor) I use pie filling
1 c. packed brown sugar
1 c. chopped walnuts OPT
1 1/2 c. icing sugar
2 tbsp hot milk
3/4 tsp vanilla
Dissolve yeast in warm water
Mix flour, sugar and salt in bowl; cut in shortening and butter intil particles are size of a small pea. Beat egg yolks slightly, reserve and refregerate egg white
Mix egg yolks, milk and flour mixture into yeast mixture.
Cover and refregerate at least 8 hr.
Grease cookie sheet
Divide dough into 8 equal part.
Roll each part into 9 inch square on floured surface
Spread each with 2 tbsp preserve (pie filling will do just fine; I did it with raspberry, strawberry and blueberry all were good)
Beat reserved egg white until stiff; spread over preserves. Sprinkle each square with 2 tbsp brown sugar and (2 tbsp of walnuts if using.)
Fold square into thirds
Place on cookie sheet.
Cover let rise 1 hr.
Heat oven 350F
Bake about 25 min ot until golden brown.
Spread with Glaze while still warm
Cut into 1" strips
