Bishop’s Bread

Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes Serves: 12


This is the coffee cake made on Sunday mornings at Northfield Mount Hermon (NMH).


  • 2 cups Brown Sugar
  • 2.5 cups Bread Flour
  • 1 cup Butter (room temp, unsalted)
  • 1 Egg, large, beaten
  • 1 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 Tbl Cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup Buttermilk


Mix the brown sugar, flour and butter together. Set aside one cup™s worth to use as a topping.

Add the remaining ingredients to the mixture and mix to combine. Pour into a greased 9x13 baking pan and sprinkle the cup of topping on the batter. Bake for 30-40 minutes in a 350 degree oven (or until done.)
