Mom’s Homemade Relish


Green pickle relish great on Burgers and Hotdogs


  • 8 large cucumbers, seeded (firm and free of blemishes)
  • 12 onions, peeled
  • 2 red peppers, seeded
  • 2 green peppers, seeded
  • 1 head green cabbage, outer layer of leaves removed
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 4 cups vinegar
  • 6 cups sugar
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp celery seed
  • 1 tsp mustard seed


-Put all vegetables threw a mincer or mince in a food processor. Combine all in a large pot and cover with boiling water. Add the 1/2 cup of salt and stir all together gently. Let stand 3 hrs -Drain and add vinegar, sugar, turmeric, celery seed and mustard to minced vegetables in large pot. Boil 20 minutes

  • My Mom’s secret to get us kids to eat her home-made relish when we were kids was to add some green food coloring after boiling to look like name brand pickle green relishes. -Seal in sterilized jars
  • Have all canning jars, cleaned well and sterilized in a hot oven with hot water for the 20 mins vegetables are cooking. Also your 2 piece lids for the jars boiling on top of the stove to be ready to use once jars are filled.
