Raw Papaya Curry

In Sri Lanka we also make a light curry out of unripe green papaya by adding grated coconut, turmeric, onion, garlic, sweet cumin, mustard.


  • 1 small unripe papaya (It should be hard and not yellow inside)
  • Pinch of Turmeric
  • ¼ to ½ cup water.
  • 1 cup grated coconut (dessicated coconut will do as well)
  • Pinch of sweet Cummin
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 small red onion
  • You can add a chopped green chilli for extra kick!


Cube the papaya and keep on a medium fire with just enough water to simmer it. Add the turmeric to the water.

In a food processor or grinder mix the other ingredients until well combined and add to the semi-cooked papaya. Keep stirring the mixture very quickly on medium to high heat for about 1-2 minutes and remove as soon as it starts giving off an aroma.
